Micro SD cards vs Portable Solid State Drives
Posted by David - DriverCam
Most dashcams use microSD cards for storage, recording video directly and overwriting older clips automatically in loop recording. They’re compact, affordable, and compatible with nearly all dashcams, but performance depends on their speed and endurance ratings.
For Full HD (1080p) recording, a Class 10 or U1 card works well, while U3 or V30 cards are better for 2K and 4K video. Because dashcams record continuously, it’s essential to use a high-endurance card — often labeled High Endurance, Pro Endurance, or Industrial — designed for thousands of write cycles to handle heavy use.
Some advanced models, like the VIOFO A329S series, now support Portable Solid-State Drives (PSSDs). These connect via USB-C and offer much larger capacities (hundreds of GB to TBs), faster speeds, and longer lifespans than SD cards, making them ideal for 4K, multi-channel, or long-duration recording. While PSSDs cost more and are slightly larger, they deliver professional-grade reliability and performance for those who want maximum storage and speed.
