Is a dashcam lens important?
Posted by David - DriverCam
The lens is one of the most important parts of any dashcam — it focuses light onto the image sensor and determines how sharp, clear, and realistic your footage looks. Dashcams use lenses made of plastic, glass, or a mix of both, and the material makes a big difference in performance.
Plastic lenses are lightweight, impact-resistant, and cost-effective, making them ideal for compact or entry-level dashcams. However, they can lose some sharpness over time under heat or strong UV exposure.
Glass lenses offer superior clarity and heat resistance. Made from multiple layers of precision optical glass, they produce sharper, more accurate footage with better colour and detail, especially in bright or high-temperature environments.
Some dashcams use hybrid lenses, combining glass and plastic elements to balance quality, weight, and price. In short, the better the lens, the clearer your evidence — with glass lenses giving you the best long-term image quality and reliability.
