How does GPS work in dashcams?

Posted by David - DriverCam

A dashcam with built-in GPS does more than record video — it tracks your vehicle’s exact location, speed, and route, embedding this data directly into your footage. Using satellite signals, the dashcam logs your position and movement in real time, allowing you to see your journey on a map and view speed or location details during playback.

This added layer of information provides powerful evidence in the event of an accident, confirming precisely where and when it happened and how fast you were driving. GPS also keeps your dashcam’s date and time accurate and can provide useful extras like speed-limit or camera alerts.

For both everyday drivers and fleet users, GPS turns your dashcam into a complete driving record system — enhancing reliability, accuracy, and peace of mind every time you hit the road.

GPS itself does not enable you to remote-view into the dashcam from a remote location. This function is only reserved to dashcams with SIM cards either built in or added into modules that plug into the dashcams.
