What is FOV, or Viewing Angle?

Posted by David - DriverCam

Field of View, or FOV, refers to how much of the scene your dashcam can capture at once, measured in degrees. It’s one of the most important factors that determine what your camera sees — whether it’s just the road directly in front or the entire width of surrounding lanes. A wider FOV means your dashcam records more of the environment, including side traffic and pedestrians, while a narrower FOV focuses more tightly on the road ahead, delivering finer detail and sharper clarity.

Dashcams typically range from about 90° to 170° in FOV. Narrow angles between 90° and 110° are ideal for drivers who want crystal-clear focus on what’s directly in front of them. Standard fields of view around 120° to 140° offer the best all-around balance between coverage and detail, which is why they’re the most common choice. Wider lenses, usually 150° to 170°, capture a much broader view of the road and side lanes — perfect for maximum situational awareness — though they may introduce slight edge distortion.

Choosing the right FOV is about finding the right balance between detail and coverage. A moderately wide angle, around 140° to 150°, is often ideal for everyday use, giving you a broad perspective of the road without sacrificing clarity. In essence, your dashcam’s field of view determines how much of your journey it truly sees — and a wider, well-balanced lens ensures nothing important goes unnoticed.
