If you're running a dash cam from the VIOFO A329 series, you can extend its storage well beyond what a microSD card can hold by adding a portable solid-state drive (PSSD). Instead of your footage looping over itself every few days, you'll have weeks of recordings on hand.

At three hours of driving a day with a 3-channel setup (4K + 2K + 2K at 30fps), here's roughly how much each drive holds before looping:

1TB = about 26 hours (around 8 days)
2TB = about 52 hours (around 17 days)

2-channel setups will record even longer.

The real benefit is hindsight. With more footage stored, you can look back at recordings that weren't locked, for example when the Police ask for footage of an incident from a couple of weeks ago, or when you only realise later that something happened. It's also handy for the occasional road trip, when you want every moment captured.

It also takes the pressure off your microSD card. A329 series cameras back up footage from the microSD card to the SSD, reducing strain on the card and keeping the clips that matter on a larger drive.

Like with memory cards, we'd recommend getting the largest drive your budget will allow. More storage means fewer overwrites and more footage to fall back on.

What you'll need: The VIOFO SSD cable is required to connect the SSD to your dash cam. It comes in 1.8m and 2.5m lengths, so you can choose based on where you'd like to place the drive. Your dash cam will also still need a high-endurance 32GB or 64GB microSD card installed alongside the SSD to allow for firmware updates. We also recommend a hardwire kit for power.
